1. Free WhatsApp Business App

Most businesses in the UAE are familiar with this option. Tailored for small to medium enterprises (SMEs), the free WhatsApp Business App offers essential features. It allows you to create a basic business profile displaying your business name, operating hours, and product catalogs, along with simple tools like limited quick replies. This app is ideal for small businesses looking to establish a straightforward communication channel with customers.

2. Official WhatsApp Business API / WhatsApp Business Platform

For larger businesses in the UAE looking to scale, the Official WhatsApp Business API, also known as the WhatsApp Business Platform, is a paid solution that offers advanced features and capabilities through the WhatsApp Official Business Account (OBA). Some of the key benefits include:

  • 1,000 free conversations per WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) each month

  • Your business name is displayed instead of your phone number, even if the customer hasn't saved your contact

  • Green tick verification to enhance your business's credibility

  • Ability to send broadcast messages without the risk of being blocked

  • Interactive buttons in chat messages for seamless customer interactions

  • Multiple logins for team members to manage conversations simultaneously

  • Integration of chatbots and automation to streamline operations

  • Payment link option directly in WhatsApp chats

These features, along with many more customizable options, allow businesses in the UAE to efficiently manage customer communications and enhance their digital presence.

WhatsApp Official Business Accounts (OBA)

When it comes to WhatsApp Official Business Accounts (OBA), businesses in the UAE have two main options: the WhatsApp On-Premise API and the WhatsApp Cloud API. Both options offer similar features, but the key differences are found in their backend setups:

How to get the API

Software upgrades and new features are developed by Meta and will be automatically available to businesses on the Cloud API.

BSP will perform API software upgrades periodically. New features performed by Meta may take a while to become available to all businesses.

For either of the options mentioned above, whether you opt for the WhatsApp On-Premise API or the WhatsApp Cloud API, businesses in the UAE have the flexibility to choose how they implement their WhatsApp Official Business Account (OBA).

Understanding third-party WhatsApp Business API

For businesses in the UAE seeking a more budget-friendly option, third-party WhatsApp Business APIs might seem like an attractive choice. However, it's important to be aware of the potential drawbacks:

  1. Connectivity Issues: These third-party solutions often require your phone to be constantly connected to Wi-Fi. If the connection is unstable or drops, your business could miss important customer messages or fail to send responses, impacting your customer service and communication.

  2. Risk of Account Blocking: Using third-party APIs to broadcast messages carries a higher risk of being blocked by customers. If WhatsApp detects suspicious activity or violations of their terms, your business account could be banned. In the event of a ban, you might lose access to your WhatsApp Business account and phone number if your appeal to unblock is unsuccessful.

Please note: As of June 2022, Chat API services have been discontinued due to Meta's policy changes. For a more reliable and compliant solution, consider applying for the official WhatsApp Business API.

Understanding the regulations of WhatsApp in the UAE

UAE Flag

In the UAE, including Dubai, WhatsApp is subject to specific regulations primarily concerning its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. While you can freely use WhatsApp for text messaging, sharing images, videos, and audio messages, the use of voice and video calls via WhatsApp is banned.

This restriction is part of the UAE's broader regulatory framework aimed at controlling VoIP services due to security and economic reasons. The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) oversees these regulations.

The ban on WhatsApp calls is intended to protect national security by preventing the misuse of encrypted communication channels. Additionally, it supports the local telecommunications industry by ensuring that only licensed providers can offer such services, often through paid alternatives like BOTIM, C'ME, and others, which are approved by the government.
